The Do's and Don'ts of Recruiting

Back in December 2008, I was asked to train the board of the Bakersfield Jaycees for their annual retreat. This board was relatively new at the time, having been operational for only a year, and they were ready to break the mould that was created by the previous board. President Mike and I brainstormed an agenda that boiled down to this:

  • Breaking the Ice
  • Vision, Mission, and Strategic Objectives
  • Officer Roles & Responsibilities
  • 2009 Goals
  • 2009 Calendar
  • Lunch
  • Leadership and Motivation Training
  • Delegation Tactics
  • Planning for Success
  • Recruiting Members
  • Evaluation & Wrap-Up

We got through the whole thing in about 7 hours, and we received feedback like this: "I feel that the greatest benefit of this training is that it brought us together as a board and helped us to define our goals for the year of 2009. Now it is up to us, and, as such, the facilitator's job is done."

I recorded some of the retreat on digital video, so here is a taste: two tips for recruiting members on a "soft sell." (If you're interested in the other eight, send me a note.)
